Coined words, phrases and nicknames. . .
In this fast paced world of emailing and texting and IMing, one would think that a fast talker and a quick thinker like I am would not hesitate to jump on the band wagon. And I do love the time saved in leaving out the actual words in the sentences, but my family has a tendency to create nicknames and phrases that are longer than the names and situations they are meant to replace. (This really shouldn't come as a surprise considering my tendency to long windedness!)
Here are a few of Sig's best made up words:
Morether (more)
Churchable (This is like fashionable, but it means appropriately dressed for church. I think it is clever and quick, but I just ruined the quickness with this long winded explanation:)
Lasterday/lastertime/lateryear -- pretty self explanatory
Carshmallow - car completely covered in snow
Here are a few of Hannah's:
Crocatators -- one day she stopped saying alligator or crocodile and combines the two, covers both bases.
B's - Barbies, as in "I going to play B's."
(I would have more for Hannah, but, 1) I can't remember, and 2) she is a big fan of pantomiming until I am crazy trying to guess what she is saying!)
The Parents:
The happiest time of the night - girls' bed time, but we refer to is as "Girls, it's the happiest time of the night. Go put your pjs on." And sometimes we break out in song.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - this is just the general password for escaping . . well, any trap Rob puts me or the girls in.
Bear Trap - any time Rob traps one of us he yells "Bear trap." Generally this involves someone laying on someone and minor suffocation.
Tweet-Tweet-Poop - Must be uttered before the holder of the treat will distribute a treat.
"You are a *insert last name*" - which means you must do whatever I am asking you to do. Generally uttered with force by Rob to encourage hard work, happiness. . .essentially it translates "Never show weakness!"
And our renaming does not end there. Most people and places we know get nicknames. Our girls become Sigbert (I call her this in public and people give me strange looks that clearly say "You named your child SIGBERT?"), Bigs, Big Little, Siggy Biggy. Our oldest became Miss Sass, Sassifrass, Banana Rama. Rob is Roberto, Dr. Science, or sometimes Dwight. I am Jenia, or Hey You, most often moooom. Grandma is Manna (Because Miss Sass couldn't say Grandma) I have a friend named Aki who became Archuleta. Our entire condo complex where we lived for the first two years we were married had only names like: The Cowboys, The Party Boy, The Flight Attendant, The Cranky Man, The Realtor, etc.
Fred Meyer is Freddies, Walmart is Wallies, Jack in the Box became inexplicably Yippy in the Box (Thanks to Sig). It is almost like speaking in code and it is fun when strangers can't interpret.
I have noticed that a good portion of the bloggers out there use nicknames for the people they refer to in their posts. So, I was wondering, what are your nicknames and what is the story behind them?

This made me LAUGH OUT LOUD...So so funny! Since I've gone a little more anonymous, I started calling my son The Prince and my daughter The Princess...But one day I referred to my son as Hunka Hunka (as in burnin love) and people started calling him that...so I will now refer to him as such. My daughter has just recently decided to be Little Red Riding Hood. For.No.Good.Reason. Oh and my hubby is just THE MAN...although he doesn't care if everyone knows his real name...but now he signs his comments "The Man." There you have it!
I started blogging before I knew what blogging was and never thought to give everyone cute code names--so now my whole flippin' name and that of all my children are out there for everyone to see and prey upon if they so wish. Good thing our name's are fairly generic.
A guy friend of mine once gave me the nickname "Bella"--that made me feel ultra glamorous :)! My kids are "the boy", squirrley, monkey, and budgee. And I probably call them by those names as much as their real names.
I think I'll for sure have to start wearing my "churchable" clothes on Sunday and having "the happiest time of the night" too!
This is soooo cute!! Found my way here from SITS. Adorable blog too! I call my older son GOOGLY BEAR, because loves the movie Monsters Inc and he said that was his name and that was it, so it just stuck. So I had to make a name for the baby, since we just alays do things in two. So I call him GOOGY WOOGY...they are 2yrs and 4yrs old. I am pretty sure by the time they go to school that won't be allowed anymore, but I will say it as long as I can.
hey, glad to have stumbled upon your blog from SITS. "Happiest time of the night" happens over here too but it goes someting like this, my husband says ...."babe, it is 7pm already, isn't time for this show to start soon?" and my favorite... "do we have to bathe them...again". Poor bugger. Anyhow, loved reading your entry and saw teh cookies that Hannah made...scrumptious.
Congrats on being a Saucy blog this week!
Leif and I upon dating became known as "Lurf". Leify is known as Lefty to my parents because his room is in cowboy decor ( I guess Lefty sounds cowboy-ish) and "Lefty" is also a famous golfer. My Dad has big plans for my little guy ;)
My sons are randomly called nales like Little Chief, Pumpkin Pie, Black Eyed Pea, Love Muffin, Sugar and Babe.
I call my husband Child Husband cause he is much younger than me and looks much younger than he is.
My husband also thinks I am a dork because I call people that I know are going to be killed in a horror flick "deaders" He keeps telling me it isn't a word.
Stopping by way of SITS.
I love the made up words and the lists they are great.
You have a very cute family.
I have more nicknames for my kids than I can remember! It just depends on the moment and what I am feeling! It can be anything from "bugga" to "poopy" to "Zachy pants".
oh my goodness! she is tooo funny! I'm lovin' the churchable one. Definitely quick and to the point!
My second favorite is crocotators!
We are all for the nicknames and altered words in our house.
My dogs are each known by about five different names, even their blog names are nicknames.
The kids have eleventy twelve each - their blog names are also used in public. This year Babyman even signed my birthday card Babyman! He has now asked to be known as 'DestructoBoy'.
The children I work with have many different names for me, so I often answer to two different names in one conversation. 'Mish' has been used longest and now even MY children call me that.
The ones that crease me up most are that the children's special toys each have nicknames now! Hamlyn has become DingDong (hamalamadingdong!) and Flowerbelle is now Stinky!
I am all for family phrases, it is one of those unifying things I think. This is why I have a dictionary on my blog!
(eek! such a long winded answer -soz that is sorry in sisterspeak!!)
I too love churchable - great word! :)
We have an entire language of our own, too, and thinking about things we say 'round our house, it dawned on me that most of them are either lines from movies, tv shows or books or else from misspelled words/typos we've seen over the years (eg "assume" for awesome or "sourdug" for "sourdough" which both were words my youngest sister spelled incorrectly in notes over the years). We also make up words that now are firmly ingrained in our kiddo's brain (and why wouldn't they be, as she has no reason to know her parents are just weirdos!), like "sneakities" for sneakers or "snocks and sneaks" for socks and sneakers (as in "please go put on your snocks and sneaks now so we can go")...
Nickname-wise, the most often used nickname we have for our daughter is Bug, which is short for Lovebug and Bugaboo. We get some strange looks calling things out to her like "Bug, three more minutes and we have to go home!" in public. :)
Cheers!
Those are some awesome nicknames and made-up words. I think I like you a lot!! lol I'm forever making up words and creating nicknames for things, but you have some awesome ones. I love the carshmellow. and B's. Just hilarious.
An outsider clearly needs to look at the family manual for translation before coming over.
I don't really have any that I can think of. As a child i was called Née Née but that is about it.
I love those! Especially the carshmallow and the crocatator!
I don't use nicknames much when I blog, but I did start referring to my DSLR camera as DAMN STUPID LITTLE RATSH*T and then I added TCALOM (that costs a lot of money).
Because I can't take a good photo to save my life.
Cute post! I started out using my real name and still do, but my husband is Mr. Baseball (because he likes all things baseball), and my little 23 mo. old is "the redhead" (for obvious reasons). Nothing to exciting or creative, but we manage quite nicely. Its kind of fun being on the dl.
I call my twin nephews Frick and Frack, which is what they are called at home when they are being goofy. Their younger sister is Frieda! I just refer to adults on my blog w/ their initial.
Totally adding "churchable" into my vocabulary. That is seriously awesome!
My nickname is Lula...given to me by my sister-in-law 10 years ago. It's what my in-laws call me, and now it's my bloggy name. Good times.
Carshmallow - now that's clever
Oh, and if people look at you funny when you call your daughter "Sigbert" in public, you should go into some long explanation of how you came up with that "name."
that is really cool post. nicknames are fun
Haha! Too funny!! Happy SITS Day - congrats!
Happy SITS day...yep nicknames are So fun!
Before my SIL had kids she used to name her pets and then never call them by their names. Tobee (her rottweiler was Brewzer), Safari (her cat was Saffi Baff). Okay, just crazy changes. So, when her son Brandon was born and she had been home from the hospital for a few days, I called her and said, "Hey Darcee, how little Branny Branny Boo Boo Bear?" She thought it was funny.
I call my kids, Palatka Pete, Lala, and Emmy Doodle, so I'm not one to talk.....:)
Loved this post.
Congrats on your SITS day!!!
hehe. Your family is seriously hilarious!
I think churchable is my favorite. :)
Hmmmm nicknames. My daughter, Delia, is often called Miss Delia or baby girl on my blog, but that's about it. I refer to my husband as Stu. Anyone else (other relatives/friends), I don't call by name. Maybe I'll have to get creative. :)
Oh, and happy SITS day!
Happy SITS day to you!
When I went on vacation with my ex, my daughter and her boyfriend several years ago, we came up with nicknames for each other; my ex-Brick, cause he is as humorless as a brick wall; me-Bella, not because I am beautiful, but because I am shaped like a bell, LOL (For Whom the Bell Tolls); daughter-Cantina, because she says she can't do stuff right; and boyfriend-Carlos, because I refused to call him Cassanova while he is dating my 15/16 year old daughter for good reason.
My dogs Potter and Coconut have nicknames. Potter is Parrot because he sits on my shoulder and Coconut is Marshmallow because she is white and smushy-loveable. But if either of them start acting up, then I call either of them Rufus which rhymes with Dufuss which is self-explanatory.
My daughter before she was born was called Baby Snookums and now that she is expecting, I call her yet to be born, Dinky Doo. After my daughter was born she became simply Sweetie Pea. So I am into the nicknames big time too!
Gert & Essie aren't my girl's real names, but they're their old lady names - Gertriude McFeely and Esmerelda Erkenstein... where they came from.. I know not....
Except for calling my daughter light of my life on my blog, I use initials for people. Not too creative, I know, but it works.
Oh man, I could go on and on and on about this. I am pretty partial to nicknames and abbreviations. It drives the hubs crazy that I refer to things with abbreviations, like PBK for Pottery Barn kids, etc. The strangest nickname, though, would be what my husband calls me (Melanee). It started as "Mel Mel", transitioned into "Mer Mer" and somehow became "Shmee Shmee". Which is what he calls me. Sometimes I become "Shmee of the Shmees". He is so weird.
dxvakzomOk...I have commented on this one before...but I just re read it and it's still funny! Love it!
I refer to my son as 'Techno-Boy' 'Gadget Man' or 'Computer Guru' but I usually call him 'Bubby' (he's 18)... My daughter is known to everyone as 'Nature Girl'... I've never met anyone who appreciates the outdoors (leaves, trees, clouds, sunsets, scenery, frogs, toads, bugs, wildlife... etc.) near as much as she does... But I usually call her 'Bear' (she's 15)
That's great! :) Our family is a family of Snuggles.. My dh is Snuggler, I'm Sunggle Bunny, ds is Snuggles and dd is Snuggly.
Love the nicknames and family words! I tried going by my girls initials in my blog (which also happens to be younger daughter's nickname) but reverted back to their real names (gasp!) I have a couple other links to site which use their real names, so I figured people could figured them out if they really wanted to. ;) Besides, our oldest daughter happens to have the most common name for 3-6 years old--there are 5 in her kindergarten class of 100 kids. Her nicknames are Loula Belle, Emma Lou, and variations on that like LoulaBellaButt. Our younger daughter is Elsie (LC), Elsie Belsie, Leela Belle, and Pumpkin Butter Butt. The cat also gets nicknames like Ellie Bellie (he's a boy--so masculine).
I named my grandma Bobo when I was little and it has stuck. Not only do all the grandkids use the name but so do most of her friends.
So funny! I love the made up words...very descriptive!
My made up names aren't too inventive. My husband and I collect playing cards, so of course our twins are The Jokers!
I have so many nicknames for my son: Moose (when he was born we didn't know if he was a boy or a girl & I asked the nurses who had taken him to clean him, what it was and one said 'it's a moose' bc he was 9lbs 8oz)
Bubba (just kind of came out)
Dude Face Love (my hubby calls Moose this one...very sweet)
Dude, Buddy...other boy nicknames
My favorite is Tristonia (his name is Tristan and I don't know...again, it just came out).
My husband is Big A, Ant, or Tony (although I HATE all of them, especially the latter).
I call my hubby My Love and I'm his Lovely.
And my mother-in-law keeps trying to get us to call her Ooma...I can't stand that. If Moose can say Grandma, that's what it's going to be. And my MIL tries to call her husband Papa, which to me is a name for a daddy not grandpa.
haha those are awesome!
Congrats on your day.
Fun post!
I like nicknames, but I have a hard time coming up with them!
Oh Lord ... our nickname list is loooong.
I am "Sassy" (self-explanitory)
Big D is "Jackass" (again, self-explanitory)
Jay is "Troll"
Phu is "Monster"
and
Peanut is, well, "Peanut".
We, apparently, are not as creative as you guys :)
I love their new language...carshmallow had me laughin! When My kids were little we had little rhymes for all their names....even 20 some odd years later they still do it to each other. Lindsey was Lindserbinzer bonzei buns. Lacey was LaceyLynn bo ben bo bennie. And Jared was Jared-beared wear and tear. It makes me laugh when you can call a 28 year old that and they don't throw something at you!
That was awesome! And I want you to give me a nickname now...please?
We always called our dog, Calvinator...his name was Calvin.
We call our new dog...Smiley Miley. Her name is Miley.
Every time someone gets in trouble (not the big bad trouble, just semi-trouble) we insert the middle name..."Renee"...that's not anyone's middle name in our family...I just like it! ;D We even do it w/the cat and dog!
YAY! I love this post. It got me thinking about all the nicknames in my family: Cami was Cami Whammy or Peanut, I (Stephanie) was Stephy Weffy or Demanie, Katie was Katie Batey, Boot Worm, or Mushroom head, and my brother, Rob, was Aquaman. LOL We had a name for our Van: Big Barbara, and Marshmellows are now Marshy-mo's. Every time someone opens a chirstmas present we either all shout "It's a sweater!" (from three amigos) or "It's a poop-bomb!" Thanks for creating the nostalgia!!
Most of ours are things the kids said when they were little. The Boy called cookies nonnies so cookie monster became nonnie rah-rah. He called basketballs boppies so basketball hoops became boppie doals. The Girl did not have as many...but to this day, she calls afros alfros and we do too!
Happy SITS day!
So funny.
Grandpa is "boppy".
The Boy has many: Pudge, Coco, lovey.
On my blog, my husband is The Candy Man.
Reading these comments has been so fun!
Made-up words are lots of fun. I enjoyed reading yours, but it's the end of the day and I can't think of any. I know we've got some though ;)
I love it! I have a Hannah too, and she is FULL of nicknames, she says crocigator for both and sometimes even curveballs me with an allidile. We have a fridgerfrater in our kitchen and we dig with shuggles. Oh, and do not forget to put on your sumscream, you would want a sumburning.
Oh and her favorite think the in the entire world is a burning pyfom. A very large burmese python at the Columbus Zoo named Fluffy....
Ah, nicknames, they are so daggone indearing.
Thanks for posting. Loved the read.
Emily
I am visiting from SITs and LOVE this post! This post made me chuckle. Aren't kiddo's hilarious!?!
Thank you for a good laugh towards the end of my work day! It was needed!
Those are great! My daughter is Beanie and my son is Bubba. Or sometimes I call him Chuck or Charley even though that is nowhere near close to his name. But he hasn't any hair and his round head reminds me of the Peanuts.
As for me, it's muma. But the funny thing about this is that I was given that nickname only weeks into dating my hubby. People winced when he called me that, but I thought it was cute.
Love it! I use nicknames all the time. I have my Peanut and my Walnut and actually wrote a whole post about their nicknames awhile ago. Nicknames are fun.
And yeah, I refere to people like "Flower Boy" all the time. Or Blondie.... At least you know you're not alone, right?
My college nickname was Pectin. I don't really even remember the story behind it - just a really late night silly conversation with my roommate freshman year, and the name stuck for a very long time. I still respond to it, or I would if anyone called me that anymore. My husband was Jif or Skippy (his name is Jeff and he loves peanut butter). My 1-yr-old son Thomas we refer to as Tommy-gun, Tom-Tom, Tommy-boy, Bug-a-boo. My daughter Zaylee calls herself Zaylee-girl.
I love the happiest time of the night! I'm going to have to start using that!
Here are my nicknames:
I call my daughter the AC (her name is Allison, we call her Allie and the Allie Cat)
I call my husband Wylee, after Wyle E Coyote, because he is a super genius, but like the coyote, a little goofy.
Great post!
Love the nicknames you shared with us. We don't have a ton of nicknames around here...except for maybe...my name is Jennifer - my hubby sometimes calls me furbee...Sometimes I call Zach - Bubba...don't know why.
My BIL's family is funny. All of them have nicknames. And they totally stuck. His aunt is named Linda. Well, her little sister (BIL's mom) couldn't say Linda, so she called her Ging-ga (rhymes with ring-a). Well, now she is a grandma and her grandchild couldn't say Ging-ga so she has a nickname for her nickname, Gaa-Gaa.
Justin is the name of my BIL. His nickname is Schoonie..really don't know why.
Love some of those names... I've had to think real hard now,
Cat - Georgie Porgie (George)
Nanapoppys cat - Rockie Baby (Rockie)
My horses have Uncle or Auntie in front of their names ie Uncle Jimmy
Miss 5 adds "sister" after her name... Im sure there is more..
Somehow I got to be "Momsipan" a combination of "Mom" and "Marsipan". I'm not sure why.
My kids are "Beanie" from my son Jonas being called "Jojobean" and "deeds" from my son Deacon being called "Deeky Dee"!
Hehe!
These are great! Happy SITS day!
It sounds like your whole family is good with words! I love "churchable"; you may have coined a new phrase for us! My husband and I picked up some of our children's mispronunciations when they were toddlers, and it's kind of sad that they have grown past them and we still say them the wrong way.
I'm so glad I checked yesterday's SITS post. Otherwise I would have missed spending time on your delightful blog!
The churchable word caught my eye, too! New addition to the vocabulary!
Let's see, I call my husband Perfect Husband and since there are no children in the household yet, we name cars -
McArthur
Batman
Juno
Flamenco
Kuna
Gigi
Golden Bawawa
Aloha
Trix
Do those count? :)
