Perspectives and Possibilities

Change.

IMG_4623.jpg

Change is a funny thing. Sometimes it is exciting, and sometimes scary, or hard.  Or all three.  And sometimes it is so gradual you never even notice it is happening.

I feel as though our family has been evolving in a lot of interesting ways over the past year.  It feels like good things are on the horizon.  That doesn't mean I don't have moments of temporary panic and doubt, but when I look at where we stand and how far we've come I can breath a little easier.  In fact, sometimes a hint of giddiness creeps in.

Possibilities abound. . .

The same can be said of parenting.  Some days are monumental.  But mostly not.  Mostly you trek along doing what you set out to do, one step at a time. Homework. Piano lessons. Housework. Volunteer. Laundry. Tae Kwon Do. Run. Make lists. Cross items off lists. Trudge along. . . But you are so close to the details of your life you often fail to see the wonderful things that are developing until you step back and take a good look at your progress--at the whole picture from your new perspective.

Last week while I was researching for a paper topic for a class I am taking I came across a study that was analyzing the effects of parental involvement on a child's success--both in school and in life.  And while many factors affected how well a child performed in school, the most influential factor was the environment fostered by the parents.  Specifically, the study claimed that parents who had high expectations and aspirations for their children, who read with them and to them, and who exposed their children to educational experiences (like trips to the museum or simply having books in the home), were the ones whose children most often succeeded.  All of these, of course, come from actually spending time with your children, accompanied by positive reinforcement.

It all got me thinking about what we do with our children--and by we I mean "me".  I certainly feel as though we have spent more time doing fun things as a family over the past six months or so.  That was a conscientious decision we made last summer--to spend more time doing fun things as a family.  And we have.  We bought cross country skis and have gone a couple of times already, which we love.  We have begun to run as a family and have signed up for our first 6K as a family (perhaps that isn't actually fun, but we pretend it is!). We have tried to maintain our tradition of Family Fun Friday, intermittent though it often is with Signe's soccer games on Friday.  Nevertheless, that study had me wondering if we were doing enough.  Surely we could  spend more quality time together as a family.  And while helping the girls with their homework and reading to and with the girls is good, I thought it might be fun to somehow combine Family Fun Friday with educational activities. Leisure and learning. Anything to combat the influx of electronic activities encroaching on our lives.

So I went online and compiled a list of local museums, theaters, nature preserves, historic places, family entertainment venues, etc.  Anything and everything I thought might expose the girls to something new-- activities and places meant to be fun and broaden their perspectives.  Near the bottom of the list was rock gym.  Rob has been wanting to try rock wall climbing, so when I saw the gym I added it to the list.  MY first choice was the Portland Museum.  Rob's first choice was the rock gym.

We went to the rock gym.

Honestly, the girls were stoked and much braver than I would have suspected.  We all had fun working our way to the top of the 36 foot wall.  I tend to be afraid of heights.  But I learned that when I have a safety rope, I only have to focus on where my hands and feet are going RIGHT NOW.  Before I knew it I was at the top! When I stopped and looked back at how far I had gone, I was surprised to see how high I was.  It was a whole new perspective.

Kind of like life.

We expect a lot from our girls.  We push them quite a lot. I worry often about whether I am pushing them too much or not enough.

IMG_4596.jpg

Do I invest enough quality time with them?
Have I provided good opportunities for them?
Will they be happy and well balanced?
Am I making them neurotic!?

IMG_4592.jpg

We plod along one foot hold and hand grasp at a time, hoping we are headed to a place of progress rather than a dead end or danger.  But then. . . once in a while. . .

We lean back and see how far we've come.  We take in the view. We see the good.  We feel the  giddiness start to creep in.  And we know--I know--beautiful things are happening.

Possibilities abound.

(I apologize for the crappy picture quality--I wasn't about to try taking my good camera--I clearly need to get a good quality point and shoot!)

Family (& Friends) Fun Friday

In the spirit of all things fun and family, we let the girls choose their activity last friday.  And of course their first choice was to invite friends.  At this point, these particular friends are pretty much family--their father even suggested we claim them on our taxes this year since they are over so much! Luckily they are good boys and we really don't mind having them over.

The four of them put their heads together and before I knew it, we were off to the fabric store--I even impressed my husband by thinking to bring my 40% off and 50% off coupons.

The goal: pajama bottoms for all (we even got enough to make some for another little friend not present).

Then of course Family (& Friend) Fun Friday quickly turned into Mom and Dad work and kids go play Friday.  Luckily, the pattern said it was so easy even some guy could do it (as attested by the picture of said random man sewing them on the cover of the pattern envelope).  Not that Rob sewed, but he did cut out all the pjs while I started sewing them together.  Funny how the kids vanished when the actual work began.

And once they were all made the kids donned their fancy sleepwear and ran off to play video games sans the parents who worked so hard to put the "fun" in Family (& Friend) Fun Friday.

Next week I think I will choose the activity!  Any suggestions? My only request is that we can make it Family Fun IN THE SUN Friday.

Family Fun Friday

Another week another round of Family Fun Friday.  And finally some great weather to do it in.  Unfortunately, Signe was sick so we had to be creative at home.  So we let her pick our dinner, our dessert, and our night's activity.

Her choices:

Homemade spaghetti dinner with "ranch bread" (because I make french bread with ranch dressing mix in butter spread on French bread).

Homemade confetti cupcakes that they could help make.

A round of monopoly.

The fun started around four o'clock with the cupcake making and decorating.

Then Rob arrived home in time to help make dinner.  And I don't think I have ever tasted better spaghetti sauce. YUM.  We added a salad from our abundant rows of lettuce in the garden.

But before we could eat our dinner the signal of summer was sounded. . . .

THE ICE CREAM TRUCK!

And the girls ran out the door in their bare feet to catch the first taste of summer. . . after a mad dash to alert the neighbors.

Signe was the first to catch a glimpse of it coming around the corner. . . long after its pied piper tune lured us all outside.

Nothing like a little ice cream appetizer!

The real entertainment was monopoly.  It is always an adventure.  Rob and Signe paired up to make a ferocious team.  Their goal was to buy one of every property so they could then sell them at highly inflated rates to Hannah and me for a tidy profit.  They called themselves the slum tyrants.  Then they decided they should actually be the slum pirates--to which Signe piped up with:

"Oh, oh, let's be the slum pirate PRINCESSES!"  Of course.

The REAL pirate, however, was the little thief who kept swiping money and property whenever someone left them too close to the edge of the table!

After a while Princess Signe deflected to organizing the hotels and houses for sale and Charly joined Rob's team.  He cleaned up his act, and started doing legitimate business.

I, despite my fair play, ended up in prison, not ONE, not TWO, but SEVEN TIMES!

See those little get out of jail free cards? Those are Rob's.  He never needed them.  He offered to sell them to me after my second incarceration but I told him I didn't think I would need them, because who goes to jail three times in one game?  I guess I do. . .  times two.

We finally abandoned the game around 9:30, and while Hannah had gone bankrupted and I was nearly cashless, I like to think I might have won. After all I had this little gem that would have cost you 1,400 should you have the misfortune to visit.

And since I spent so much time in jail I rarely had time to visit any hotels.  So maybe we have all been playing this game wrong all along.  Next time I am trying to go to jail more often. . . of course planning something only makes it less likely to happen in my experience.

Friday Family Fun Night. . .

As the end of the semester nears for me (2 weeks left and counting!) I am finding a plethora of ways to avoid writing finals.  (Though blogging has not been one of them--until today)

The week my Friday class ended (and anytime a class ends a whole month before the end of the semester a celebration is certainly called for) we instituted the Friday Family Fun Night.  And for a family that seems unable to maintain a darn thing these days, it lives on.  After the first week at the movies, the second week of bowling, the third week of give-the-girls-ten-bucks-and-hit-random-shops (like the backyard bird shop and World Market), and the fourth week of go-shopping-for-easter-dresses. . . we realized we were lacking creativity. It seems shopping and movies were easy fall backs.  So last week, while Rob was off in Chicago, the girls and I made homemade pizza, constructed a blanket fort in the family room, and---watched a movie.

THIS week we were determined to do something that didn't involve shopping or movies.  The only catch was, the weather was so good that we were tackling our yard and didn't want to lose productive time.  Soooo, we decided to make the most of Friday Family Fun Night and incorporate the girls fun into our yard work.

Enter the bane of our never-can-finish-a-thing existence, symbol of our lack of accomplishment---The TREEHOUSE:

The girls have been wanting to finish it since we started it. . . three years ago! It has been totally functional, just lacking some trim and paint--and cool things like pulleys and interior decor.

So we decided to add a planter box, a pulley system, and some hooks to hang their baskets while not in use. . .

Then we decided to add "Friends" into the Friday Family Fun night. . . and paint.

We let the lot of them loose inside the playhouse with a bucket of light blue paint and a handful of brushes. . .

Sure it was complete chaos and the kids were as blue as the walls when we finished, but I think it makes a statement!

So if you need something painted, I know a crew that just might be for hire--for the right price, of course.
