Firefighter or Firestarter?

Recently we realized that Signe was a little confused on what exactly a fireman's job entailed. Hockinson is having a fair at the end of the month and a fireman came to our door to sell tickets to the fireman's breakfast. Signe was rather nervous about going because, "Will the firemen start fires while we are there?" and "Will the pancakes be burned?" Clearly she thought firemen started fires rather than put them out! We discussed the role of a fireman and thought we had it all worked out. Then her preschool class had a field trip today to the fire station. When I said, "Let's go. It's time to go to the fire station." Signe looked and me and grinned. "Are we going to eat pancakes?" She asked. I laughed and explained that was a different thing altogether and only for the fair. Normally firemen don't make us pancakes.

She took it all in stride and warmed up when we got there. She even aimed the hose at a window in a fake building they had out behind the station. But she drew the line when it came to actually standing next to a fireman in all his yellow suited glory. Not even going with her friend Grace was enough to bribe her. Hopefully we don't have a fire any time soon, I am not sure she would be open to going anywhere with a fireman at this point!
